Description
this subspecies has red and melanistic (black) forms; red as papou, but black to top of head extends to area behind eye and merges with black band to back of neck of nominate type; blue frontal edging much more extensive; yellow patch to sides of body absent; lower parts also black; upper tail-coverts end in green (red in stellae); middle elongated tail-feathers with yellow tips; length of tail between 227 and 310 mm; larger.
Female as male, but lower back and lower flank area yellow.
