general plumage red; broad violet-blue band to crown; second band from eyes to back; back violet-blue; broad blue band to breast; shoulder feathers, flight feathers and thighs black; under tail-coverts washed with blue; wing-coverts with black tips; tail upperside reddish-purple, underside red; narrow periophthalmic ring dark grey; iris orange-red; feet grey; bill orange-red

Immatures with blue to crown, nape and underneath the eyes; body variably marked dark blue; bill and iris dark
